Title: P.J. Proby Interviews
Post by DutchBrand on 26th Aug, 2012 at 1:51am
PJ will be giving several interviews in the coming period, in order to promote the Sixties Gold Tour, so keep your ears and eyes open.
So far we've got:

- An interview for the BBC by Keith Middleton which will be broadcast on Sat 27th October:
'The Extravaganza' with Keith Middleton (on BBC Shropshire, BBC Stoke, BBC Hereford & Worcester, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire and BBC WM)

- A written interview in the Southern Daily Echo. Not sure when that one will be published.

We'll keep you posted,

Manja

Nice to hear about this Manja. Although I doubt we will hear anything up here, north of the border, but if I do I will certainly pass it on.

I sometimes contact newspapers to remind them that P.J. is coming to town in a tour. I ask them (push them LOL!) if they would consider doing a preview write-up. Their answer is sometimes positive & a lovely article surfaces.Maybe Barry you could ask your local newspaper to do a piece about the "60's Gold" tour with the emphasis hopefully on P.J.

That is fine normally if DutchBrand organises a show. However, please remember that the interviews for this Tour are all set up by Chimes International's PR people and the interviewers will divide their attention equally between the different artists. So please do not do anything to obstruct the official PR people.

Here's some more:

- a live interview in a Sunday night show featuring 60s-80s music with Ged Robinson, BBC TEES on 2nd September around 9.45PM. The Darlington shows will be promoted here.

- another interview for the South of England, that will cover Chichester, Bognor, Midhurst and Petworth Observer series; Worthing, Shoreham and Steyning Herald series; West Sussex Gazette; West Sussex County Times; Crawley Observer; Mid Sussex Times; Sussex Express; Eastbourne Herald; Hastings, Bexhill, Rye and Battle Observer series and covers several south coast dates at the begining of the tour. More info to follow.

Enjoy!

Read first post, but saw no interviews scheduled for north-west.Read Rons and Barrys , thought great idea, will contact local paper, myself, but then saw Manjas post, so maybe not! Agree with Barry though. There is very rarely any news about P.J. in the north-west(Merseyside) in my case. P.J.did once do an interview for radio Merseyside, think it was year before last. My husband heard it, but I did not !

My idea about contacting a local newspaper was nothing to do with interviewing P.J. or anyone else appearing.I meant well! It was simply tell the newspaper that a certain big tour is coming to their town/city & asking them to pass the info onto their readers telling them who is on the bill & also to give out some info about the wonderful past musical history of the acts who'll be onstage & then also say where & when the Legends will be appearing. Just the important general info & if the newspaper adds a few pics from their archives that's even better.
I know that any "official" P.J. interviews in the newspapers or on the radio are nothing to do with me.My idea is simply to generate a bit more interest in the complete show & all of the artistes. The more publicity the general public see about a show like "60's Gold" then hopefully the more the ticket sales will increase.

Ron of course you meant well, and understood your meaning. I meant my post to be said in a  jokey way. Just meant I could contact local paper when P.J. comes to the Phillamonic hall Liverpool, but would never do so unless it was fine to do so.It was the way I worded my post. :D

The interview for the Observer in the South of England was cancelled by the interviewer...
However, the interview with Douglas McPherson for the national newspaper The Stage was a huge success, so please keep your eyes open!

Hi Jen,
The "Liverpool Echo" is quite good regarding P.J.,they do more than most newspapers to let people know when he's coming to town or if he's already done a show to comment on how it went. The Liverpool radio stations also like Mr P.J.P.
He likes Liverpool & Liverpool likes him.

Well everyone, I've contacted the local paper in Glasgow and politely asked them whether they could maybe do a little piece on some of the biggest names of 60s music that will be in the Royal Concert Hall on 1st Dec. Headlined (for us obviously) by PJ. Will let you know if I hear anything, but you dont ask, you dont get.

This all sounds very positive to me I'll look out for the write-ups around the Worthing area - if they go ahead, and get my sister to keep her eyes open in the local news.

The more write ups in the papers the more people will know about the "60's Gold" coming to their town or a neighbouring venue.
Elaine sent me what probably is one of the first previews of the show arriving, this time in Llandudno. Here is the link:

The link does work. As I stated on Facebook these kind of small articles give the show an extra boost. Mind you in this one the writer calls P.J. an "easy listening star". P.J. is much, much more than that!!
In some record stores you find the Proby CD's in the "easy listening" section near to Perry Como & Dean Martin. WRONG!!

Barry..you are right.Lots of people are 60's music fans but are not on the computer or reading mags about the 60's etc.So to see a small but useful article in their newspaper about a 60's tour stopping by locally should get them excited & down to the box office to order their tickets.
I'm going to the show in Worthing at the end of September so very soon I'll contact the newspaper there & ask 'em to give the show a plug.I do that at every P.J. show I attend.Every newspaper has a showbiz writer & if you ask them nicely if they can fit in a compact article they usually try.

I see that on 5th Sept. the "Liverpool Echo" have also done a preview of the "60's Gold" show. It's mainly all about Gerry Marsden which is understandable being as he's a "scouser".The other acts get a quick mention including Chip who will not be appearing.Strange that the newspapers do not know that yet. Or perhaps there is still a feint hope that he could make some of the gigs?

As far as Im concerned, they can put PJs CDs anywhere they like, as long as it is still being shown that he has material to purchase. I must admit that any time I go into a record shop, I make sure that PJs covers are at the front of the lot beginning with the letter "P". Old habit of mine. lol

I too always place P.J. CD's in the rack where everyone cannot fail to see him. Not every record shop has P.J. CD's tho' which is not right!
I love to see this in the CD racks: Orbison,Pitney,Presley & Proby.....4 Legends next to each other in alphabetical order.

Heard the Graham Rogers interview and enjoyed it very much .PJ was in good form again, all the memories were there.I enjoyed "Somewhere" but I don't know where they got the version of " Hold me"  from , I don't think it did him justice, his voice is far better than that now.

Title: Re: P.J. Proby Interviews

Yes I agree with you Bridget. Both Hold me and Somewhere were not versions I have heard before. Still the interview in general was really good. PJ at his most eloquent. Loved his "posh" impersonations but loved more to hear his Texan drawl.

Two questions about this interview: "Young americans swings the world" was the 1962-pilot of Shindig. Here's the content and of course we would all looove to see it:
Jackie De Shannon - "Sing Sing Sing."
--P.J. Proby - "Endless Sleep" & "Turn Me Loose."
--The Chambers Brothers, Clydie King and the Sweet Things - "Peppermint Twist" & "What'd I Say?"
--Tura Johnson (from Sweden) - sings "Personality" in Italian.
--Scooter Teague - "Mack the Knife."
--Jesse Collins - "Believe What You Say."
Also appearing: the Chaps, the Young America Girls, the Leon Russell Band; Glen Campbell and David Gates.

I've been trying to find a copy of this show, on Youtube et al... Does anyone out there know if it exists???
Second question; Rogers played the wellknown so called Eckstein-version of Somewhere. But didn't PJ record another studioversion of Somewherewith his voice more in tune with i e Youve come back? Am I totally wrong here?
PS Although I am swedish I have never ever heard or read anything about Tura Johnson...

I'm betting that "Young America Swings The World" must be out there somewhere on tape but hidden away & forgotten. The USA saved everything as money was not a problem for U.S. television back then unlike at the BBC & ITV where using the tapes more than once to save money was the norm.
James Burton was also on this U.S. show that crammed all of those singers in.Without the adverts it only lasted 21 minutes. It was a CBS television production but was only aired in certain states. I've been searching for this show for more than 20 years.

Thanks Jan for that info.Do you know anything more about the TV show "Young America Swings The World"?
Tura Johnson was supposedly from Sweden but there's no info about her on the internet anywhere. On the show she sang "Personality" (the 1959 hit song from Lloyd Price) but why would a Swedish girl sing that song in Italian on a USA TV pop show? very strange!

I did a recent interview on Radio Teesdale to increase pJ's profile in my area. I promoted the Gold Tour, and PJ wanted me to push the Legend CD which I was glad to do. The interview lasted about half an hour and I got 5 songs played. It is going to be repeated again, but I dont know when as yet. Hope you all listen in when it goes out. I intend to keep promoting PJ in any way I can, the more people know about him the more bookings he will get and the more tickets will be sold, and best of all WE ALL GET TO SEE HIM MORE OFTEN  ;D

It's all connected to the 50th anniversary of P.J.'s trousers splitting on January 29th,1965 in Croydon. P.J. will include that in his chatting.

The P.J. story on BBC London 94.9 radio today was great. Add to that the chat both Robert Elms & Russell Clarke had with P.J. "live" & everything was perfect.
P.J. even told us all that in March he'll be appearing onstage with Van Morrison. It's for a Children's Cancer Trust Charity & together they will sing "Whatever Happened To P.J.Proby". P.J. said the date was March 15th but I cannot find a venue. However Van Morrison is doing a show for the same charity on Wednesday 25th March.....guess where?? The Royal Albert Hall. WOW! if that's where P.J. joins him onstage that will be wonderful. Fingers crossed.

I'm glad you all liked the interview. Of course it's very good to hear PJ on BBC Radio London. However, we felt the interview was very disappointing. PJ spoke to Russell for three hours last week and still he didn't have his facts right! The two presenters kept giggling at the words "split pants". But the worst was that they didn't give PJ the chance they had promised him to tell the real story behind the pants splitting. About the politics that were going on in regard of wanting to replace the American with a British boy, how Gordon Mills had already bought Tom Jones a place on the tour and they only needed an excuse to throw PJ out. Tom's and PJ's minder Big Paddy watched the money change hands. Mary Whitehouse provided them with an excuse and three days after Croydon the press publicised the photo of the ripped trousers and blew the whole thing up! PJ was banned and Tom Jones took over, imitating PJs act. He had a ponytail with a big bow and very tight trousers, that showed more than PJ ever showed! Of course, later Tom became a great artist in his own right. It is very sad that the BBC didn't have the guts to let PJ tell his story. It makes you wonder what has changed in 50 years?

Title: Re: P.J. Proby Interviews
Post by AnnieLean on 30th Jan, 2015 at 3:05pm
No, nothing has changed in 50 years, I've yet to listen to the interview - I will of course - but I didn't expect to hear any more than I already knew.  PJ told me in February last year that he had written a song for Van and would be seeing him "soon".  He recited all the words to me and I wonder if that will be included in Van's show.

Title: Re: P.J. Proby Interviews
Post by AnnieLean on 30th Jan, 2015 at 3:51pm
Have now listened to all the chat, I thought it was excellent, they did make the point that the reason for the interview was for the anniversary of the 1st trouser splitting incident, so in some respects it's a good thing it's not forgotten - although we fans always feel that there's more to the man than this.  Also of course a lot of the stories on the telephone were "unrepeatable", well we know PJ and can see the logic of this!!

New P.J. fan Pam Lyons (from near Doncaster) has also ordered the book.Pam is also getting lots of P.J. CD's. At the moment she's only on FB. I'm trying to get some of the P.J. fans on his FB Fan Forum to come on here as well. Why not?
Plenty of new names being attracted to P.J.on FB & that is great to see.
Pam is seriously thinking about going to see P.J. as Van Morrison's guest at The Royal Albert Hall in March but she can't find a companion to accompany her.
She also requested a copy of my "amateur" CD & that should be with her about tomorrow.
