I especially had my work mates listening out for a PJ mention today too. I told them there was no way BM wouldnt play a PJ song, and give his birthday a mention. Im very surprised at Brian.

Brian did not mention P.J.'s birthday on his programme on the 5th November.....I e-mailed & pointed this out & suggested that this morning maybe on the latest programme he could make the Proby fans happy with a belated birthday wish to P.J. & a song. Sadly nothing happened. Is it so difficult to remember a Legend's birthday?especially when no other music star of any significance has a birthday on the 6th November.I'm very disappointed in "S.O.T.S."

I know Brian is quite ancient now but his programme organisors & production team should make sure he has the correct info & make sure they sort out the requests for P.J. 's birthday that I know arrived at Radio 2!
On the other hand for the rest of the year P.J. gets a lot of play time on Brian's show so no complaints there!

Saturday,November 26th...no P.J. song on "S.O.T.S." but as usual still a great selection of 60's music. Brian played Kenny Lynch's "Puff", a very unusual song I'd never heard before!Betcha wouldn't be allowed to write a song with that title these days!LOL! He also played an album track from Cupid's Inspiration called "Never Trust In Tomorrow" a song that P.J. would do a great job on just as he did with their similar number "Yesterday Has Gone".
Finally my fave song of the whole 2 hour show was Jimmy Radcliffe's "The Forgotten Man".This was covered by Frankie Vaughan at the time but the ultimate version of this classic is by Gene McDaniels who is my favourite black singer & was a 60's Liberty stable-mate of P.J.'s

On the most recent "S.O.T.S." radio programme Brian played a Walker Brothers album track. A song I didn't even know they had recorded "I don't want to hear it anymore". Of course we all know that P.J. did this song & it was the B side to "Let the water run down" from 1965.
Well Scott sang " I don't want to hear it anymore" as a solo singer,Gary & John were nowhere to be heard on this number. Scott's vocal was perfect but the actual impact of the song & the way he did it was nothing compared to P.J.'s version. As usual P.J. put his heart & soul into the recording & made it so believable. That's the difference between P.J. & so many other top class vocalists...P.J. "lives" the song, the rest do not!

Hi Ron,
I always loved Gene McDaniel's songs, he put so much emotion into a song, just like our man always does. I had no idea Gene was dark skinned but I'm glad to hear he was & it amazes me how many of the 50's/60's stars who were really big that remain faceless to me as I don't recall seeing photos of them back then. Hard for younger generations to comprehend these days but there was a time when songs hit the top without video versions.

I have everything by Gene McDaniels. They groomed him as a crooner but he was so much better than that. Later in his career he went a bit weird & recorded some strange stuff saying to the world that is how he really was. Scott Engel went down the same road & also started to do strange songs. On one of Scott's later recordings he had a huge piece of raw meat in the studio & was banging on it with a stick as part of the background effect.O.M.G.!!
My fave Gene song? "Another Tear Falls" this must be on YouTube.

Brian's a real stalwart for PJ, I heard the programme - it's a must to listen to for our type of music.  I think it's about the only time we get PJ on radio, even though it's not enough times per year.  I've requested for my birthday in April but I shan't be holding my breath.  It was the last record played if anybody wants to take a listen.

I nearly switched off the radio last Saturday morning when the "S.O.T.S." show was almost over.Good job I didn't as "Wicked Woman",as previously mentioned, was the last track to be played. It's always a great show but for about the last three weeks P.J. hadn't been played & I thought "Here we go again!.....no P.J".
Brian also gave an explanation to his listeners of exactly who Orville was.So thanks Brian & his researcher Phil (The Collector) Swern.

I missed Wicked Woman as didn't catch SOTS last weekend - will listen via listen again as the show is available until the start of this weekend's episode.

I should point out though that SOTS is not the only BBC radio show to play or mention PJ. Bill Kenwright played JB's chart hit of PJs composition, Clown Shoes, on his Golden Years show yesterday (23/01/12) before discussing his work with PJ in the West End before playing Connie Francis' version of Together. In addition, JB was also played by Bill a few weeks ago, with Bill again stating that Clown Shoes was his last hit and penned by PJ.

Other shows which have played PJ on the BBC are Pick Of The Pops (60s UK hits only for obvious reasons) - if you visit the PJ artist page on the bbc a list of programmes that have played PJ recently is available there. Smiley

Hi Devil,
Thank you for this very interesting information! We had no idea that Bill Kenwright had his own radio show. We just listened back to it and PJ really enjoyed it.
Here's the link for everybody to listen again:
Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login The part about P.J. starts after ± 49 minutes.
The artist page on the BBC site is also very interesting!
By the way, P.J. was briefly live on the air in the Philip Solomon Wolverhampton City Radio show last night. Sorry we didn't tell you all before, but it was a bit short notice. I don't think it has a "listen again" option.

Bill has always been a P.J. fan as well as being a talented actor himself in his younger days. He's also the Everton FC chairman & a top West End show promotor for anyone that didn't know that.
I knew he had his own late night radio show but it was a bit too late for me!!LOL! Cheesy
